Tsavo West National Park is one of Kenya's most spectacular safari destinations, offering an extraordinary blend of wildlife, dramatic landscapes, volcanic features, and rich biodiversity. Established in 1948, the park covers approximately 9,065 square kilometers and forms part of the greater Tsavo Conservation Area alongside Tsavo East National Park.
Located between Nairobi and Mombasa, Tsavo West is characterized by rugged terrain, volcanic hills, lava fields, acacia woodlands, riverine forests, swamps, and natural springs. Unlike the open plains of Tsavo East, Tsavo West offers a more varied and scenic landscape, making it one of Kenya's most photogenic national parks.
One of the park's most famous attractions is Mzima Springs, a crystal-clear oasis fed by underground streams originating from the Chyulu Hills. The springs produce millions of liters of fresh water daily and support a rich ecosystem of hippos, crocodiles, fish, aquatic birds, and lush vegetation. Visitors can observe wildlife from a unique underwater viewing chamber, making Mzima Springs one of Kenya's most iconic natural attractions.
Tsavo West is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, hyenas, waterbucks, impalas, lesser kudus, and numerous antelope species. The park also contains the renowned Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, which protects one of Kenya's largest populations of endangered black rhinos.
The park's volcanic history is evident throughout the landscape. Visitors can explore the dramatic Shetani Lava Flow, formed by ancient volcanic eruptions, and climb Chaimu Crater for breathtaking panoramic views. The nearby Chyulu Hills create a stunning backdrop and are believed to have inspired Ernest Hemingway's famous novel The Green Hills of Africa.
Bird enthusiasts will find Tsavo West particularly rewarding, with over 600 bird species recorded, including kingfishers, hornbills, eagles, weavers, starlings, ostriches, and migratory birds.
With luxury lodges, tented camps, stunning scenery, and exceptional wildlife encounters, Tsavo West National Park offers one of the most diverse safari experiences in East Africa.
